Namecheap Review

Namecheap offering domain names and hosting all with the ability to pay with Bitcoins.

Namecheap Overview

Founded in 2000, namecheap is one of the oldest ICANN-accredited domain name registrar you can find online. Somewhat unique in its time as an independent registrar, namecheap also offers complementary services we have come to expect from registrars, such as hosting and email support. In fact, like many of its contemporaries, namecheap is now known more for its hosting services, but still maintains a good and reliable registrar service.

Supporters of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Fight for the Future, namecheap has values that speak to a lot of crypto users. Of course, this also means you can pay them in Bitcoin! But don’t worry, credit cards and Dwolla are accepted in a myriad of currencies.

Here is a breakdown of advantages of namecheap.

Price

As the name suggests, namecheap’s primary edge over competing registrars is its pricing. Of course, prices of top level domains (TLD) vary, with popular ones such as .com and .net costing more than newer ones like .computer or .compare.

You should be careful when choosing cheap registrations, however, as most registrars with low registration fees charge high renewal fees. You can easily end up paying more for a multiple year registration. For example, GoDaddy offers an incredible $0.99 registration fee but charges you $13.49 for subsequent annual renewals.

Namecheap charges $10.69 for a .com registration for one year, with renewals costing the same price. If you’re going for the long term, a six-year or more registration costs you more money at namecheap than most other sites.

Value hosting

Unless you plan to have your own servers, most individuals and small businesses will opt for Shared Hosting. Namecheap offers its own shared hosting, with extremely competitive prices. For only $9.88 for your first year and $38.88 per year of renewal, namecheap’s Value Hosting gives you 20 GB of SSD-Accelerated Disk Space and Unlimited Bandwidth for up to 3 domains.

If you think this is less value than other hosts who offer Unlimited Disk Space, you should realise that those actually come with hidden limits and are not on SSD-accelerated disks.

But if it’s not enough for your power usage, you can still opt for their Unlimited Hosting at only  $29.88 for the first year and $129.88 annually thereafter. That’s still less than $11 a month for renewals for Accelerated SSD Disks (you’ll know the difference!) – cheaper than a lot of other hosting providers.

100% up time

As an industry leader, namecheap offers 100% uptime even on shared hosting. That’s right… where everyone else offers 99.8% or 99.9%, namecheap guarantees you zero down time. And unlike others, if you do experience down time, they’ll issue you with free credits to buy plans or services. How do they do this? With the latest M1000 blade Dell technology. Each component is fully redundant from power, so nothing is ever cut off, be it your network card or your SAN. Don’t know what these mean? Your website will never be switched off!

Dedicated support

Unless you’re an expert at web design and maintenance, you’ll invariably run into issues when registering a domain and hosting. This is when you’ll truly appreciate namecheap’s excellent support team.

They’re available 24 hours on Chat and on Helpdesk, with response times that are typically hours. You also speak to real people, although there is a helpful knowledge base to help yourself.

Disadvantages

Namecheap are after all, a registrar first and a hosting provider second. They have a short 14-day money back guarantee (other sites offer at least 90 days) and they don’t do bulk deals. Also, you pay the same annual fee for two years and ten, while others tend to give a discount on long-term commitments.

Another thing is how they overprice you for a lot of hosting add-ons that some other registrars usually give for free in their package. WHOIS privacy, SSL certificates and email will all add up to your total bill.
